High Tech High School

Yesterday in class Mr. John told us about his venture to High Tech High. He gave a brief overview such as this.. At High Tech High the students are allowed to wear whatever they would like, they call their teachers by their first names, eat and drink while in class, "hang out" all around the campus during free time, and classes aren't structured persay. At this highschool one can choose which classes he or she would like to take. I believe this is a good environment for learning. By having food and drinks in class students are constantly reenergizing themselves. Also, by not sitting in desks and listening to lectures all day the students are actually DOING the things they are learning which 9 out of 10 times is more easily remembered. Something like this is coming to Baton Rouge in 2010. I am not saying I would leave Saint Joseph's Academy, because this place has been my dream since I was a child and I love it. But I am excited to see how this type of school evolves over time.

Bullying Causes Death

STOP BULLYING. END OF DISCUSSION.

Can bullying be the most reason cause of children suicide? Yes. In a recent article on CNN, a young boy from Georgia hung himself. His mother states that on the day of his death, Jaheem came home from school and handed his mother his report card. He looked very happy because he made all A's and B's. As his mother prepared dinner, he went to his room. When dinner was ready his mother called for him, but there was no response so she and her daughter went up to his room where they found him hanging by a belt in his closet. He had hung himself.

Alligations were made that it was caused by the extreme bullying and tantalizing the child was recieving at school. He was constantly being called gay and virgin, and it got to the point to where he could not take it anymore. This is completely awful, to go through life with no one able to help you end the bullying. Finally you just give up and figure death would be easier.

Fashion by Technology

One of the newest designers for surf and skate label RVCA doesn't have a design degree, many fashion internships on her resume or even a wealth of sewing experience. What she does have is a little unconventional: a Web site, featuring pictures of her daily outfits, that happens to draw more than a million hits a month. A year and change later, she gets 35,000 hits a day and hundreds of comments per post. As the Internet took notice of her blog, designers and industry heavyweights did, too. Neely was invited for a private tour of the American Apparel factory, then to New York Fashion Week in fall 2008 to see Alexander Wang's show and model Erin Wasson's line for RVCA. She is now going to Paris for a show.

This is an example of how technology can also help entrepreneurs. By starting a website and a blog about her fashion, this girl has been discovered as one of the next big designers.

Facebook Addiction?

ALERT! ALERT!ALERT!

Today in class I read an article on CNN about a woman who was clearly addicted to the social networking site known as Facebook. She spends over 20 hours a week on Facebook, which could add up to one whole day a week. She wanted her name to remain anoymous. Her child would ask her for help with her homework, but she would decline just because she did not want to leave her "happy" world known as Facebook. A therapist and marriage counselor in North Caroline says that some of her patients also get so wrapped up in Facebook that it ruins their marriages. One client of hers 'friended' an old boyfriend on Facebook and began flirting with him and explaining how unhappy she was in her marriage. By saying this her younger cousin saw the wall posts and told her parents which then told the husband. They are now in the middle of a rough divorce.

The physciatrist says you know you are obsessed when:

1. you lose sleep over facebook
2. you spend more than one hour a day devoting time to nothing but facebook
3. you become obsessed with old loves
4. you ignore work in favor of facebook
5. the thought of getting off facebook leaves you in a cold sweat

Pile has her own quick test: "Try going a day without Facebook. If you find it causes you a lot of stress and anxiety, you really need to get some help."

Do you ever hear a song on the radio that you know every single word to, yet you can't remember when the last time you heard it was? I surely do. This past week I put my iTunes on Party Shuffle and was amazed at the songs I had from years ago that I still to this day love. I wanted to share some of the songs from my playlist with you.

It is amazing to watch the style of music change over time. I remember loving Christina Aguilara's "Genie in a Bottle", and now she has songs out such as "Keeps Getting Better". I think it is very cool to watch artists grow up and mature their sound. Just like Britney Spears used to be an innocent pop singer, and she now has more edge to her sound and is more upbeat. Music is a big part of my life, and it is the main source of technology that I feel as though I could not live without.

Blogging this year has made me realize how much I take for granted. Like being able to listen to any song I want to with the click of a button, whether on the computer, or in the car.

Technology can be helpful in many ways. It can help you contact friends and family in the blink of an eye, or find the definition to a word you do no understand, or, in this case, it can help teach you valuable life lessons.

By watching these, plus many more, DCOMs (Disney Channel Original Movies) I learned at an early age how all people are different and it is not a bad thing. In the movie "The Color of Friendship" a white, proper young lady comes to live with an African American family while on foreign exchange. They battle their differences and end up realizing that it does not matter what color you are. A person could be black, white, purple, blue, or even green. What matters is that person's personality and their actions towards others.


Another lesson I have learned by watching these movies came from "Brink". Andy "Brink" Brinker and his friends love to skateboard for fun, while another group of skaters, that call themselves Team X-Bladz, skate for the money. Team X-Bladz is made up of bullies and rude teenagers, once Brink joins that team his friends do not take the time to question him about his decision, instead they exclude him. At the end his friends realize he was only joining the team to get money to help his parents in their financial issues. From this movie I have realized that no matter how tough life gets my friends will always be there for me, so I should be there for them. I should also give people the benefit of the doubt instead of instantly judging them.

Seventeen Again.. Again??

Remake better or worse?


Zac Efron stars in a remake of a classic story. In the movie he is an older man who while in highschool got the love of his life pregnant, so he throws away his college scholarship to marry her. He ends up getting visited by the Ghost Spirit and is turned seventeen again. Throughout the movie he leanrs more about his own children by attending school with them masked as a student. He also learns just how much he cares about his wife and does not with to get a divorce from her. Once he makes this realization the Ghost Spirit turns him back to himself and he is able to save his marriage and to better understand his children's lives.

Although this is a new twist to the story, I personally liked the Disney Channel's version better. It is also called Seventeen Again.

This Disney Channel Original Movie, Seventeen Again, starts Tia Mowry, Tamera Mowry, and Taj Mowry. This story is about a grandmother and a grandfather who have lost all contact with their grandchildren and their marriage is falling apart. One morning they wake up to find themselves seventeen..again. Just like their granddaughter. While the grandparents are attending highschool and learning more about their granddaughter and helping her with daily obstacles, their grandson is trying to figure out a way to get them back to normal. In the end the grandparents decide to renew their wedding vows and have had more personal experiences with their grandchildren.

How Not to be Hated on Facebook

There is a website link that I found on CNN that amused me today. It sent me to a web page that had guidelines of the proper etiquette one should use while they are on Facebook, or any social networking site for that matter. Here are a few of the rules they say you should follow while on Facebook:

1. Stop taking quizzes
2. Do not add people you do not know
3. Do not invite people to events if they do not like anywhere near the area, it gets frustrating
4. Do not put up statuses about your mental state of mind (it makes you seem depressed and lonely)

These rules are all things we have heard before but not necessarily put into a "rule" per say. I believe they left out the most important rule. To Be Safe! And to not give out any personal information about your whereabouts and such.

Mobile Monitoring

Teenagers in the modern world are constantly using their cell phones and are recieving cell phones at younger ages with each generation. Text messages can become vulgar and sexual. Because of these types of messages more and more teenagers are getting arrested for child pornography and are having to be registered as sex offenders. This offense will be on their record permanently and will follow them where ever they go in the near future. Sending nude pictures to one's girlfriend/boyfriend is also considered child pornography and is a federal offense. More programs such as My Mobile Watchdog and My Mobile Spy are developing and becoming more active in today's society. Parents are taking the innitiative to keep an eye on their child's use of his/her cell phone. They want to be aware of how their children are acting towards others and how others are treating their children.

This whole sex offender, child pornography case is getting way out of hand for me. I do not understand while people my own age are using their privaledge of technology to harm themselves by sending nude pictures of themselves out to the entire world. I just am dumbfounded by this. I do not understand why someone would want to expose themselves in that way and ruin their reputation and their self respect. Maybe it's just me, but my morals are far from that. I surely do not want to be registered as a sex offender and have that on my record for the rest of my life. I would rather play it safe and stick to my beliefs in life. This kind of thing brings out more harm than necessary. This is because a child takes a nude picture of theirself, sends to their current boyfriend/girlfriend, who then shows his/her friends to act cool. Then everyone ends up seeing the picture and ridicules the child who sent it in the first place. That child is then pained with grief and could do harmful things such as commit suicide. This crime is getting way out of hand and needs to be stopped now.

New iPhone

Rumors are flying that a new iPhone is coming out soon. It is said to be an "iPhone Nano". Personally, I do not like this idea. I think Apple is getting "too big for their britches". They are on top of the computer and phone sales, but they won't settle for that. This "nano" iPhone looks as if it would be too small for people to hold and talk on the phone. Also why would people want to buy the apps from Apple if the phone is too small to even play the games or read the words on it. I just think it is too itty bitty. They have had great success with the regular iPhone and the iPhone 3G and I think they should just be happy with that. It looks as if it would be easy to get lost everywhere, I know I am the person to stick my phone in my back pocket when I go places, and with the new one going to be that small and that thin, I know I would probably forget it was there and either sit on it and crack it, or accidentally wash it without knowing it was still in my back pocket, Also, there is supposably a new phone coming out that will "kill" the iPhone because the monthly cost will be so much cheaper.

Demi Moore "Tweets"

Actress Demi Moore's frequent postings on Twitter put her in the middle of a life-and-death drama Friday when a woman sent her an online message threatening suicide. Moore replied back saying, "Hope you are joking". Twitter followers tracked the message to a home in San Jose, California. There they found a 48 year old woman, which the police took in to custody for a physchological evaluation. Two hours after all of this took place Demi Moore "tweeted". She said, "Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose PD i am told they are aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman".

iPod for the Queen

Barack Obama and his wife Michelle went to London to visit the Queen. It is only formal that they trade gifts. Obama knew the Queen liked classical musicals so he got her an autographed book of the musicals. Also, to go with this gift he bought the Queen an iPod and filled it with the songs from the musicals she enjoyed most. This goes to prove that technology travels overseas as well. The Queen of England is now up to speed with technological advances. She on the other hand gave the Obamas a picture of her and her husband that she gratefully signed. To me this is not a fair trade off, but I mean, who doesn't want a picture of the Queen of England to hang in their homes?

iLounge

iLounge is a great way to keep up with the updates for one's iPhone or iPod. I actually liked the website and read a few of the articles about the new apps that will be coming out for the iPhone and iPod soon. Also, I really like the fact that you ca rearrange their homepage to meet your personal preference. For example you can move each box up or down, therefore if you do not care to read the articles, move them further down the page.

Google's Latest Prank..

Google introduced CADIE this morning, April 1st of 2009. It is portrayed as a Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity. For several years now a small research group has been working on some challenging problems in the areas of neural networking, natural language and autonomous problem-solving. Last fall this group achieved a significant breakthrough: a powerful new technique for solving reinforcement learning problems, resulting in the first functional global-scale neuro-evolutionary learning cluster.

When you click on its link intriguing homepage, it takes you to a site with panda bears on it. This is supposably Google's new sophisticated program. It has turned out to be their latest prank.

Man Relies on Twitter

Around the world in 30 days?

Paul Smith, a British adventurer, has gone around the world in only 30 days by relying fully on Twitter, the social networking site which allows users to "Tweet". He had a few rules that he set up for himself:

1. Banned from making travel arrangements up to three days in advance
2. Could only accept hospitality from those who used Twitter
3. Has to leave each location within 48 hours of his arrival there

Along the way he was given a free flight to New Zealand, had his picture taken with Liv Tyler, and raised over $7,000 for a water charity. This clearly shows how much you can do with a tweet here and a tweet there. Twitter is growing daily.

Shot while getting Bubblegum

Today Chuck Mauk would have been 37 years of age, but twenty three years ago he was shot in the back of the head and instantly killed. It is said that he was just going down the street to get a pack of bubblegum when a man in a white car pulled up. Witnesses say they saw Chuck talking to this man for a good fifteen to twenty minutes when they heard a gunshot. The next thing they remember seeing was the car speeding off and Chuck's body laying on the ground beside his bike, covered in blood. To this day they have still not figured the case out, they investigated every citizen with a white car in Houston, Texas but still could not find any major leads.

This is a completely awful tragedy, but it will make me more aware of my surroundings when just walking down the street. Also, I will be careful even around the people I know, because Chuck's mother said he wasn't one to talk to strangers. She believes her son's murderer was someone he knew and trusted, otherwise he would not have stayed to talk that long. Even though this is a very painful topic, it is still a real "eye-opener" to those who live inside their own little bubble, and do not fully comprehend the dangers of the world.

MySpace Trouble

"Ladies make good choices"

It's a phrase we hear every day from Mr. John, yet we never really hear it. Yes you hear the words, but are you actually listening to what he is saying? Make good choices. Make good choices everyday, everywhere, with everyone. Today in class we were discussing a young teenage girl who posted explicit photographs on her MySpace page. I took interest in the topic looked it up on Google.

A 14 year old girl, in New Jersey, posted explicit photographs of herself on her MySpace page. She was arrested and charged with possession and distribution of child pornography. She was forced to register in her state as a sex offender under Megan's Law. Maureen Kanka, whose daughter, Megan, became the law's namesake after she was raped and killed at age 7 in 1994 by a twice-convicted sex offender, blasted authorities for charging the 14-year-old girl. "The teen needs help, not legal trouble", she said. Investigators are now looking into further cases of this matter and are trying to decide what to do.

So as we walk out of the classroom each and everyday, take the time to really think about Mr. John's words and reflect upon the decisions you make.. "Oh and ladies.. make good choices".

April Fool's Day is a day of practical jokes and pranks. Everyone likes to participate in the fun, even website companies. Each year Google pranks the nation on April Fool's Day. Recent pranks have included 2008's "G-Day" and "Dajar". "G-Day" was when Google allowed viewers to view the news for the next day. This is viewing things in the future, which the web can easily predict. After pranks like this, viewers are awaiting Wednesday, April 1, 2009 to see what practical joke Google will be playing.

Conficker

Conficker is a worm that is coming out on April Fool's Day 2009. Once Conficker infiltrates a machine, it tries to crack administrators' passwords, hijack security software, disable commercial antivirus software, and opens the PCs to further infections. Internet security experts were so struck by the authors' skills that they formed the "Conficker Cabal" to fight back against the worm. Many people are frightened by this, but others are staying positive thinking that it is going to be an April Fool's Day joke.

Skype for iPhone

We're Skypin. We're Skypin.

Skype is now an app for the iPhones. While it still is not perfected completely, there is a free version for all iPhone or iPod Touch users. There are a few perks to the app that users cannot get from using the Windows version on their computers. Taking pictures straight from Skype to use at your avatar is one perk that the iPhone offers, because it already has a camera built in. Now people can Skype whenever, whereever right?? WRONG. Yes they can Skype whenever they would like to.. as long as they are in a Wi-Fi range. This is pretty amazing. I enjoyed Skype on my computer, and now I can enjoy it on the go.

$100,000 for Virtual Property

Can you believe that a man has payed $100,000 for a piece of property from a virtual world? Jon Jacobs, the man who purchased this expensive non-realistic property, believes that he can bring in over $1.6 million dollars per year by using his purchase to his advantage. He wants to build resorts, nightclubs, and fertile hunting grounds on his property. He then could use those businesses to make money, to help compensate for his own purchase. All of this has been done on the virtual world called Second Life.


Personally, I think this is one of the stupidest things ever done and one of the brightest all together. I believe it is stupid because I would not want to have all my money tied up in some virtual world, I would rather live in the real world and use my money for the good of myself and others. On the other hand, it is a very bright act considering that everybody enjoys different activities and makes a living out of millions of different occupations.

There are some people in this world whose job is making up virtual worlds like these. There are also other people who enjoy their virtual world, whereas you or I would enjoy spending time with family and friends. So by reaching out to those people in the world, Jon Jacobs is actually making a very logical decision. Although it is something I would never consider, I cannot speak for everyone else.

NASA "Tweets" on Mars

NASA was honored Wednesday for its efforts to inform the public through the popular social-networking Web site Twitter.

More than 38,000 people followed NASA's "tweets" of the Mars Phoenix Lander mission.

NASA received the "Shorty Award" for documenting the mission of the Mars Phoenix Lander. The Mars Phoenix Lander spent nearly five months in 2008 on the red planet conducting research.

Twitter allows users to post updates or "tweets" in 140 characters or less. NASA said it delivered more than 600 updates during the 152 days the Phoenix was operating in the north polar region of Mars.

By the end of the mission in early November, more than 38,000 people were following its tweets, NASA said.

We have just recently learned about Twitter in class, and this is an example of
how popular it has gotten over the past few months. Technology in this
day and time is far beyond my comprehension level. It amazes me that I can log
onto my computer and know what is going on in Mars, by refreshing my Twitter account. The entire universe can be up to speed with what is happening on other planets at the click of a button. Think back some years to when people could only communicate by sending brief telegrams. Look how far we have come today. We are now able to know almost anything
with a click.

Second Life

Doctors are treating patients in Second Life. This is a virtual hospital with patients where students in med school can get a "hands-on" experience. The students go through certain steps while treating their patients. One important step is that they must always wash their hands before seeing a patient. This is a new way for students to learn, aside from the normal reading in textbooks or by watching. Through this virtual world the students are doing it all themselves, but without the risk of endangering real life patients. I believe this is a new step for the technological world. This may lead to more discoveries, as far as the virtual world goes. Next there will be virtual worlds to help teach students for numerous occupations. I think this is one of the most interesting articles that I have read in a while, that is for the technology section.

Online Magazines

Has buying magazines become a waste of money?

With the new technology we have in today's world, most everything a person needs to know can be found at their fingertips. Online magazines are sweeping the nation. I would rather go online to read articles than spend $3 dollars on a magazine at the store. This is because in the printed magazines, some articles may be shortened to fit, or may not be included at all. Also, the online source can provide the viewer with more pictures and an eye-catching layout. Magazines are usually short and simple to keep the reader's interest up, but the internet is a continuous source. On the online web pages there are tabs at the top with different subjects such as music, celebrities, latest gossip, etc. So the viewer can just click on what he or she is most interested in without having to deal with the rest of the information. Unlike a magazine, where you may only find a few articles that spark your interest, which would therefore be a waste of money, the internet sources have a bigger variety.

Whenever you hear of something on the radio or on the television about your favorite celebrity, you may not always have an updated magazine handy, so what do you do?! You turn to your handy dandy computer and go to your favorite online magazine's site. If all else fails you know Perez will have the latest gossip. Perez Perez Perez. What more can we say about this man who thrives on drama. He is the master of gossip, he knows who did it, where it happened, and all the juicy details in between. All in all the internet offers many opportunities, whether you want to look up a magazine, or just find articles about the latest news.

Pimp This Bum

Father and son in Houston, Texas got tired of seeing homeless people under a bridge. They decided to make a website to help out these people. They went to the guys under the bridge and said they would give them $1oo dollars a day if they would hold a sign called "Pimp This Bum". Donations will also go to the "bums" under the bridge. Some California rehab center donated three weeks of rehab to this man who lives under the bridge. The website is a source to make donations for the homeless, to help them get better lives.
This is the homeless man that is living under Highway 6 and I-10 in Houston. His name is John, and he has received over $50,000 in donations so far.

Podcasts

Holaaaa!

Podcasts. I do not have much experience with podcasts personally, but some of the other girls here do. Their teachers use podcasts to help them with their learning. Each girl here is different. We have audio learners and visual learners. These podcasts help out the audio learners. My friend, Lauren Daigle, has said that a few of her teachers make podcasts. She finds them very useful because even though she is listening in class, she may miss some of the lecture. So this way, when she gets home and starts her homework she can replay the podcast and be fully prepared for the next days discussion. I find podcasts very interesting, but I am more of a visual learner, therefore they do not help me as much.

Youtube is the best website to go to for videos.
The website contains videos for each generation. I used to only go to Youtube to watch music videos, or videos for entertainment, but recently after this class, I have started to search videos about more important things. For example one day in class we watched a video called "Did You Know?". This really got me thinking. You see going to Youtube to watch music videos may have been one of the best things to ever happen to my generation, because sooner or later we hear about videos such as "Did You Know" and we have this website at our convenience to look up other videos of the sort. Youtube to me, is like my online video google. It has everything and anything, from uploaded home videos, to television shows. I always know where to turn to when I need to share or watch a video. It is one of the best ways for an entire world to connect in unison.

Hello.
I do not find this program useful for girls my age. Personally I do not know when I would use the program. Unfortunately, I do not find it as interesting as the other websites we have been viewing this quarter. I would much more enjoy websites having to do with pictures or entertainment because that is what my generation is more interested in as teenagers.

Web 2.0/Library Thing

"Like to read?"
Library Thing is a great website to see how regular people rate the books on your reading list. I for one love to read, and this is a neat way to see what people really think of all the books out there. Most of the time I would just google a certain book and go through website after website to see what different stores rated the book, but now I can just go to one website and have everything I need at my convienence. I think this is a website for those students who would like to keep track of all the books they have read and what they thought of them, so that for future reference they can either recommend or not recommend the book to others. Also, this helps them be more knowledgable of all the books they have read, and/or are reading.

Well the other day in class Mr. John was discussing this website called Twitter.
Most of the girls just looked at him like he was crazy thinking, "why would we want to 'twitter' when we have other websites like MySpace and Facebook to use?". That night when I was doing my homework, the television was turned on 'E!'. All of a sudden I hear them talking about that crazy site Mr. John had mentioned earlier that day called Twitter. This got my interest up. I decided to see what this Twitter buzz was about for myself. I signed up and made an account. As of right now I still do not fully understand the site but I believe that it will become the new "internet trend". Now I hear on the radio as they give their usual message about you can connect with us on MySpace, Facebook, AND Twitter. This one little website that it seemed no one knew about, until that one day in class when Mr. John brought up the topic, has now become one of the most popular websites ever. Everywhere I go I am now hearing something about this status website called Twitter. I think I am going to continue to "tweet" my way through the internet. Still I enjoy Facebook and MySpace much more because they have more people from my generation connected their, I still believe that Twitter will sooner or later make its way to people my age.

The online image generators are amazing! I had a blast playing around with the ones that the link went to. I made a few different images but the one the generator i like the most was the "modern art" generator. You got to choose your colors and how big you wanted it to be, and then used your mouse to stretch it out and disfigure it. It sounds like something a first grader could do right? Well I am sure they can, and chances are there's would look the exact same, if not better than, mine. It all depends on how you lay everything out. I will definitely be visiting this site again and it is surely bookmarked on my computer!

Bloglines

RSS and newsreaders are much more helpful when a student is doing a research project or just needs to find a piece of information fast. They cut out all of the ads that nobody really cares to see. I especially like Bloglines because I can subscribe to certain posts like the iTunes Top 25 song charts, or celebrity gossip posts, such as Perez Hilton. Also, aside from just entertainment purposes I can subscribe to posts about what is in the news, the weather, and many other important topics. Whatever I need at the moment I can find within a few minutes, rather than a few hours. I enjoy being able to click the link and be given the exact information I asked for; nothing more and nothing less. I find this very helpful as a student.

Flickr

Hello.
I made a Flickr account today and uploaded some of my pictures from Mardi Gras break.
I think Flickr is a neat website for people to upload their photos, but personally I like Photobucket more. I like Photobucket more because it allows you to upload picturs, edit them, and make slideshows. I spend a lot of time looking at, and taking pictures, but I don't necessarily want to spend a surplus amount of time to edit them. Photobucket is best for me because it is user friendly.
